Juladi “Jude” Khammoungkhoune became the sole survivor of a tragic boating accident that occurred near Bodega Bay, off the central California coast, by taking refuge inside a cooler.
The 13-year-old was crabbing with a friend and five family members on November 2 when their boat suddenly capsized. When they were thrown into the water, Jude’s father told him to crawl inside the cooler. His father initially hung onto the outside of the cooler but eventually let go so that his son could get to safety. Khammoungkhoune later arrived on shore alone and spent the night on the beach before being rescued.
The group from Corning, a city north of San Francisco, set out at 3 pm on the first day of the recreational Dungeness crab season but only Khammoungkhoune returned. Causes of death while lost at sea can range from drowning to dehydration to shark attacks—and if you're in the water without any kind of flotation device, your chances of survival are significantly reduced.
So, how long could you potentially survive if you did happen to get lost at sea? And what could you do to increase your chances of returning to safety? Click through this gallery to find out.
